Introductory Post

Hey everybody, my name is Shannon Wilson. I love spending time with my dogs, friends and family. I also love riding horses but unfortunately almost never get the chance.  I was thrilled when my boyfriend, Dustin, and I got to go this summer when we were in Jasper!  I have worked as a cosmetician for four years now and as you can probably assume I love playing with make up. Working in customer service has been a huge influence in my choice for an area of study when attending university because I knew that working with people was something I wanted to pursue.  I am a Human Ecology student at the University of Alberta majoring in Family Studies.  The courses I have enjoyed the most have been those that explore communication and finding a deeper personal understanding.  Although I am not as keen on the computer stuff as this course requires, I know it will be an important aspect of my education and educating others. This spring I am also starting my courses for Human Resources and working towards getting my certificate along with my degree.

My boyfriend, Dustin, and I in Jasper this summer.

I am hoping to find a job in a Human Resources position.  With my background in Human Ecology I am hopeful to be put in a position of either conflict management or union negotiation.  Just not pay roll!  Anything with numbers just gets me frustrated.  In all areas of Human Resources communication in my opinion is the most important factor.  Although the most prominent form of communication will be verbal, one on one communicating for the areas I am most interested in I know it will become very important to have a good understanding of social media and online ways to communicate.  At some point I am sure I will have to have an online meeting via Skype, update clients through emails, and/or refer employees to other helpful organization's websites and contact information when in need. In a career that I am aspiring for being able to be contacted will be key.  Clients, employees, and employers may not all be able to contact me the same way and I will be responsible for making myself available.  This will mean phone numbers, fax numbers, websites, emails, and social media accounts.  Communication will be important everyday in a career in Human Resources and I'm looking forward to it!
